Favourite Fictional Characters | TV & Film

We've been working on an exciting project lately that has lead us to indulge in long conversations about our favourite fictional characters, so we thought we'd share a few of them with you. It'd be really interesting, and extremely helpful, if you could share your favourite fictional characters from TV and film in the comments too! Thanks, guys. We're hoping to bring you lots of adventure posts this summer, so watch this space!

michael scott lifestyle blog the office the finer things club

michael scott
BI think Michael Scott is one of the cleverest fictional characters of all time. He pretty much always says the wrong thing, apart from those rare occasions when he shows a great deal of compassion towards his colleagues. I don't know anyone that doesn't note Michael Scott as one of their favourite things about The Office. He just brings such an interesting dynamic to the show and to comedy, in general. If you haven't watched it, you really really should.

BThe Aristocats was one of my favourite films as a child and I'm still incredibly fond of it. Whilst I was a big Marie fan, Mum tells me that I always used to laugh hysterically at Georges whenever he popped up on screen, probably because he reminded me of my Grandad - who was equally as eccentric. I adore Georges, from his ridiculous glasses to his fragile dance moves. I still laugh whenever I think of this exchange between him and Edgar, the butler, who is trying to help him up the stairs after Georges refuses to use the 'bird cage' of an elevator:

E: May I give you a hand, sir?

G: You wouldn't have an extra foot, would you, Edgar?

BOH MY GLOB! I'm not even that far into Adventure Time yet but I already love Lumpy Space Princess, like seriously. LSP has some pretty important things to say and I'm looking forward to listening to more of them.

BApril just gets me, you know?! I just absolutely love her brand of dead-pan apathetic humour. I can usually be found laughing along to every single one of her scenes because I just get what she means. She's pretty much my patronus. I'm also totally all over her and Andy. They just work.

walter bishop favourite fictional characters list the finer things club blog

WALTER BISHOP
LWhat a great character John Noble created! While I did enjoy Fringe, it did struggle to keep the quality flowing from the first season to the last. However, the one character who stuck with it, and who I loved from start to finish, was Walter Bishop. He has got to be one of the funniest and oddest characters I have seen in a TV series and I find I just can't stop smiling when he's on screen, even if he does have some nasty skeletons in his closet.

harvey specter the finer things club blog

harvey specter
LSuits is one of the newer TV series I've started watching but it didn't take many episodes for me to like the characters and care about the stuff that goes on around them. While Donna Paulsen and Louis Litt get honorable mentions, Harvey Specter, played by Gabriel Macht, wins it for me. He's practically Bruce Wayne...if he decided to take another path in the realm of justice.

die hard movie blog uk lifestyle the finer things club

john mcclane
LI couldn't have a fictional character list without including a character played by Bruce Willis could I?! There's not too much explaining to do here really as John McClane is one of the most iconic action heroes of the 20th century. Saying that, I really wish they hadn't dragged him into this century. I think Die Hard 5 was the only film that made me cry last year...

daryl dixon the walking dead top fictional characters tv film review blog the finer things club uk entertainment blog

daryl dixon
LI found it difficult to choose just four fictional characters for this post but I'm going to give Daryl a mention. Bee and I just finished watching the latest season of The Walking Dead, which was awesome by the way, and the episodes following Daryl were the best. He's one of the characters I've grown to love as the seasons have gone on because you can see just how much his character has developed from his introduction in the first season.

NOW THAT WE'VE shared some of our favourites with you, tell us...

10 Signs That We Are Addicted to TV Shows 1.0 | TV

signs you are addicted to tv shows film review blog lifestyle uk the finer things club

1. 'Just one more episode' is our most used phrase, even if it's the early hours of the morning and we have responsibilities the next day.

2. Our Netflix subscription is our most important direct debit.

3. We enter a period of mourning when TV shows finally end...Dexter, in particular.

4. Season premieres and finales are important dates on our yearly calendar. Hello, Game of Thrones!

5. We live in fear of season finale cliffhangers, especially the one awaiting us at the end of the latest series of The Walking Dead.

6. We can watch an entire season in a day or two...Luther, The Killing, The Office, 24, Dexter...you name it!

7. Bee knows everything about the actors personal lives as well as their characters...even if Luke finds it a little creepy.

8. We will do everything in our power to hide from spoilers, especially when it comes to Agents of Shield and its links to the latest Marvel films.

9. We will forever associate certain actors/actresses with their most beloved characters aka Nick Offerman will always be Ron Swanson and Rainn Wilson will always be Dwight Schrute.

10. We sometimes have to remind ourselves that the characters and tv series' are not real. Li'l Sebastian will always be real though...

10 TV Shows We Need To See | TV

tv shows we need to see the finer things club

A couple of weeks ago, we shared 6 of our favourite TV shows with you and also asked you what television shows we should watch next. Combining some of your recommendations with television shows that we've had in mind for a while, we thought we'd share a list of 10 TV shows that we really want to start watching together soon. Feel free to leave your opinions, as well as further suggestions, in the comments below!

tv shows to watch

true detective (2014-)
the lives of two detectives, rust cohle and martin hart, become entangled during a 17-year hunt for a serial killer in louisiana.

L: True Detective hasn't been on our radar for very long, but once I was informed of the cast (the two above, in particular), the setting and the theme I knew Bee and I would have to give it a go. I find the American South fascinating and a really interesting setting. I'd love to explore up and down the US with Bee one day but, for now, the adventures remain on my TV screen.

tv shows to watch the finer things club blog uk lifestyle

brooklyn nine-nine (2013-)
a diverse group of detectives at the very edge of new york city.

B: This was actually recommended to us by Luke's brother so we should probably get round to watching it soon. It looks quite light and silly but we like to have a series on the go that we can marathon without too much thought, particularly when we don't want to watch something too heavy. Its got Andy Samberg in so I'm very much looking forward to it!

uk lifestyle blog

almost human (2013-)
in a not-so-distant future, human cops and androids partner up to protect and serve.

L: I've already made clear before that I'm a big fan of a lot of J.J. Abrams work, so when I heard about Almost Human, naturally, I was intrigued. I am a bit worried about its critical, and overall, reception so far. However, I loved Fringe, despite the low reviews, so I'm definitely going to give it a try and decide for my self!

twin peaks tv show review blog

twin peaks (1990-1991)
an idiosyncratic fbi agent investigates the murder of a young woman in the even more idiosyncratic town of twin peaks.

B: Twin Peaks is a cult classic, and I'm pretty confused as to why we haven't got round to watching it yet. It sounds creepy so I'm pretty intrigued! Lets just hope I can stop picturing Kyle Maclachlan as Orson Hodge.

x files to watch

the x-files (1993-2002)
two fbi agents, fox mulder the believer and dana scully the skeptic, investigate the strange and unexplained while hidden forces work to impede their efforts.

L: I have to say it, I have to stare reality in the face, I've only seen the first season of The X-Files, and for someone who often mentions how much of a sci-fi fan they are it's almost painful to admit. Alas, soon I will rightly correct this anomaly and delve through this cult behemoth, and hopefully Bee will join me.

luther

luther (2010-)
a crime drama series starring idris elba as a near-genius murder detective whose brilliant mind can't always save him from the dangerous violence of his passions.

B: Idris Elba as a murder detective?! What more could you want from a show?! I love stuff like this so hopefully it'll meet my high expectations!

house of cards

house of cards (2013-)
a congressman works with his equally conniving wife to exact revenge on the people who betrayed him.

L: All I really know about this show is that it has received a lot of critical praise but more importantly, for me, it stars Kevin Spacey. I'm sold.

its always sunny in philadelphia

it's always sunny in philadelphia (2005-)
four young friends with big egos and slightly arrogant attitudes are the proprietors of an irish bar in philadelphia.

B: I'll be honest, I have no idea what this is about or what it's like but I know a few of my friends watch it so it must be good. If the poster is anything to go by, it should be pretty awesome!

community

community (2009-)
a suspended lawyer is forced to enroll in a community college with an eclectic staff and student body.

L: Now, Bee and I have tried to watch Community before but we just couldn't get hooked. I think we watched the first two episodes. Saying that though, I have watched episodes here and there when my brother has been watching it, and they have been pretty hilarious. I think we just need to bulldoze past the first season, and see how it fares from there, especially considering we weren't convinced by the Office US straight from the off!

the following

the following (2013-)
a brilliant and charismatic, yet psychotic serial killer communicates with other active serial killers and activates a cult of believers following his every command.

B: The premise of this show sounds really interesting and right up my street considering I'm a massive Dexter fan. The only thing putting me off is Kevin Bacon...

6 TV Shows You Need To See | TV

TV SHOWS YOU NEED TO SEE uk lifestyle blog

Over the past four years, we've watched a lot of television shows together, to the point where we struggle to name them all without the help of the interwebz. We know that a lot of you also adore television shows, so we thought we'd compile a little list of some of our favourites to help you during times of need and times of great procrastination. Why creep on old school friends on Facebook when you could marathon one of the following shows?! Feel free to leave some of your favourite television shows in the comments below so people can check them out too!

the office

the office (us)

'A mockumentary on a group of typical office workers, where the workday consists of ego clashes, inappropriate behaviour, and tedium'

B: We absolutely adore this show. Our blog name is even a reference to the club that Pam, Oscar and Toby hold in the break room for god's sake! Like many people, we were really dubious before watching it. We thought it might be a half-arsed adaptation of the English version but, thankfully, it really isn't. They are two very different shows and you should treat them as such. Once you really get into it, and disregard the first episode completely, The Office is piss-your-pants funny. The characters are so well written and their development as the seasons go by is superb. You cannot watch this show without having at least one favourite character, if not a handful, and it soon becomes impossible to pick a 'stand out' moment because there are just so many. The writing on this show is simply stunning, and whilst it is downright hilarious at times, it's also extremely warm and relateable and welcoming. Watch it now! You won't regret giving it a go.

Dexter Season 8

dexter

'A miami police forensics experT moonlights as a serial killer of criminals who he believes have escaped justice'

B: Dexter is the first television show that Luke and I watched together so I guess I get a little sentimental about it but it's with good reason! Not only is it brilliantly cast, the characters are also somewhat relateable, and the writing on the whole is excellent. In just one episode you can go from laughing at Masuka's chat up lines, to empathising with Debra, to absolutely crapping yourself at Dexter and the nail biting situations that he finds himself in as a result of his 'dark passenger'. You could say that I have been known to be a little obsessive about this show at times. And yes I did adapt it into a fairly long poem full of quotes and hugely nerdy references to the show, that may or may not have confused my tutor who was marking it but hey! It's a really great show. A lot of people criticized its overall finale but I thought it was really fitting, and quite poetic. This show is just so interesting, and whilst it may not be everyone's cup of tea, it could be yours and, therefore, it deserves a chance! To quote my patronus, Debra Morgan, it's 'fucking A'.

californication

Californication

'a writer tries to juggle his career, his relationship with his daughter and his ex-girlfriend, as well as his appetite for beautiful women'

B: Before I get started, watch the opening scene. If you find yourself cringing and laughing simultaneously, Cali is for you. If you were deeply offended by it, don't watch it. Seriously. It's not one to watch with your grandparents, lets put it that way! However, Luke and I absolutely bloody love it. It's funny, witty and hugely charming. This show is great for those days where you're feeling a low or disinterested and need a pick me up, so we are more than a little sad that it's ending this year! Watch it now and hate yourself at how much you actually love Hank and Charlie, despite the fact that they're both absolute assholes that make incredibly poor life choices.

gameofthronesbanneratl

game of thrones

'seven noble families fighT for control of the mythical land of westeros'

L: This huge HBO series adapted from George R.R. Martins A Song of Ice and Fire series just has to have a mention in this post. I personally think the transition from book to television has been brilliant and I think HBO are really one of only a few companies that could pull it off, considering the budget needed to create a whole new fictional world in such remarkable detail. That's not to mention the enormous array of talented actors, actresses and all those equally important people behind the scenes. I have never watched a TV series with such stark (see what I did there!) highs and lows and to me so far it is like I have been watching one epic film, and it's one I'll certainly be viewing until the end.

B: Jon Snow....That is all.

suits

SUITS

' on The run from a drug deal gone bad, Mike Ross, a brilliant college-dropout, finds himself a job working with harvey specter, one of new york city's best lawyers'

L: This TV series was such a great find and one that took me a while to finally pick up and give a go. Having said that, I'm so glad I did because, from Dexter to Breaking Bad, from Chuck to The Walking Dead, it offers something new and refreshing that I haven't really watched before. It takes you through the fascinating world of law and those who choose to wield it, whether it be for their own gain or for someone else's. Donna, Harvey and Louis are some of my favourite TV characters, and the comedy and thrills Suits provides just makes me cry when they insist on having mid-season breaks! You might not stumble upon this show, as in the UK it is hosted on the king of re-runs Dave. However, it's definitely worth a watch.

fringe-cast

fringe

'A drama centred around a female fbi agent who is forced to work with an institutionalized scientist in order to rationalize a brewing storm of unexplained phenomena'

L: This has got to be the best sci-fi TV series in recent times, excluding The X-Files, and with J. J. Abrams at the helm it's a worthy addition to one of my favorite genres. Walter Bishop, despite his somewhat horrifically ill-advised decisions over the years, is a character that you will come to love, along with the rest of the abnormal crime fighting crew. I must warn you however that as seasons pass, especially towards the end, the quality begins to fade and you begin to want it to end sooner than it does, if only because the first couple of seasons were so good. Negative musings aside, however, Fringe is definitely worth watching for its charm, thrills, mystery and Walter's love of strawberry laces and LSD.

There you have it! We have a billion other favourites that we shall no doubt share over the course of this year but until then, make sure you check these out if you have yet to already!
